CIMIT Summer Education Series 2009: Frontiers of Inhalation Technologies in Biomedical Sciences and Clinical Medicine
Tuesdays in July (July 7, 14, 21, 28)
Time: 4:00-6:00pm
Location: MIT McGovern Institute for Brain Research
43 Vassar Street, Cambridge
Singleton Auditorium, Room 46-3002 (3rd Floor, Atrium Level, Building 46) - View directions

CIMIT Summer Education Series 2009 will feature CIMITs new Inhalation Technology Program (ITP) and innovations within this field. The objective of the ITP is to develop inhalation-based technologies that will help reduce human suffering and eventually health care costs. The ITP mission includes not only diagnosis and treatment of both acute and chronic respiratory conditions, but also systemic therapies for non-respiratory conditions. The respiratory tract can locally and systemically deliver therapeutic agents, and can also be a "window" to monitor biomarkers of disease states. Areas for innovation include the use of novel combinations of gases, therapeutic agents, inhalation systems, delivery systems and "smart-delivery" (self-monitoring/dosing) devices.

The Summer Education Series will feature research presentations by leaders in the field as well as panel discussions. The developing technology presented will have application across many disciplines. Audience interaction and cross-disciplinary fertilization is strongly encouraged.

Series moderators include CIMIT Inhalation Technology Program Leaders Jose Venegas, PhD, Massachusetts General Hospital; Augustine Choi, MD, Brigham and Womens Hospital; and Jussi Saukkonen, MD, West Roxbury Veterans Hospital, Boston University Medical Center and Dean Hess, PhD, MGH.

Series Schedule:

July 7: INHALATION TECHNOLOGY FUNDAMENTALS
Systemic Delivery of Proteins via the Lungs: Setbacks and Advances, Joseph Brain, SD, Harvard
Design Factors Influencing Aerosol Delivery by Pharmaceutical Inhalers, Anthony J. Hickey, PhD, DSc, University of North Carolina

July 14: TREATMENT OF RESPIRATORY DISEASES
Inhalation Technology for Obstructive Lung Disease, Sabine Haussermann, PhD, AirLiquide
Aerosolized Drugs in Medicine: Where are They?, Gerald Smaldone, MD, PhD, SUNY Stony Brook
