Programs Abroad

Junior Year in Paris, Madrid, or Santiago (Chile)
Through the Tufts-in-Madrid, the Tufts-in-Paris, and the Tufts-in-Chile programs, the Department of Romance Languages offers undergraduate majors an unusual opportunity for study in Spain, France, and Chile. Because these programs are supervised and sponsored by Tufts, students enrolled in them receive letter grades on their transcripts and remain eligible for financial aid from the University.

For further information see Dr. Sheila Bayne, Director of Programs Abroad, in the office of the Dean of Undergraduate Education, Dowling Hall, 7th floor.

Tufts University European Center
The Tufts University European Center sponsors a six-week summer study program in Talloires, on the Lac d'Annecy, in the heart of the French Alps. Students enroll for credit in two courses chosen from an array of offerings including French language, literature, and civilization. The courses, taught by members of the Tufts Faculty, draw upon the rich cultural and physical resources of this beautiful region of France.

Classes are held in Le Prieuré (The Priory), which was formerly part of an 11th-century Benedictine monastery. Each student lives and shares meals with a local French family; the residential component of the program adds an important dimension to the students' experience of French daily life and culture. Scholarship assistance is available.

For further information, contact the Office of the Tufts University European Center, 108 Packard Avenue (ext. 73290).

Language Houses

Maison Française
Schmaltz House – 11 Whitfield Road
Living at the French House, alias Schmaltz House, will allow you to practice your French speaking skills daily in an informal setting. There are many opportunities to share homemade meals and pâtisseries, join impromptu conversations, sample French films or TV shows, and more. Every two or three weeks, residents take turns assisting the exchange students in creating and hosting francophone events that are open to the wider Tufts community.

Located at 11 Whitfield Road, this Victorian triple-decker has six single rooms that typically accommodate four seniors and two graduate exchange students from the University of Paris. On the top floor, there are also two double rooms for sophomores and juniors willing to share a room.

The French House is ideal for seniors returning from a semester or year abroad, and for sophomores preparing to go to France. All residents must be fluent or nearly fluent in the language with a level of proficiency equal to that of FR-22.

Please send your completed application to the French House advisor, Anne Poncet-Montange. Applications received by February 1st, 2012 will be given priority. Others will be considered based on available space. Interviews of qualified candidates will begin Monday, January 23rd, 2012.
