Transfer of Credit

For questions about the Philosophy Department’s transfer-of-credit policies, please contact Prof. Lionel McPherson, who serves as the Department’s Transfer-of-Credit Advisor.

Undergraduates who have taken courses in a philosophy department outside Tufts may request that these courses be transferred in as Philosophy credits. Such requests will not automatically be granted.

Students should initiate transfer requests via the Tufts Webcenter. We strongly encourage students requesting transfer of credit to exploit opportunities to say as much as possible on their Webcenter requests about the course(s) for which they wish to receive credit. At bare minimum, students should provide a syllabus or equivalent for the relevant class. They should also be sure to mention any special circumstances, such as a need to expedite the approval process. Approval of transfer credit often requires that the Department review the syllabus, readings, examinations, and papers for a course; students who plan to request transfer credit for a course taken at another institution during their time as a Tufts undergraduate should preserve all of these materials.

Students who want to accrue Philosophy credits while studying abroad and want to check whether courses they are considering will count will need to obtain syllabi in advance. Philosophy majors are also strongly encouraged to discuss courses for which they plan to request transfer credit with their advisors (if majors) and/or the department's transfer credit advisor (currently Prof. Lionel McPherson).

Please note that the department does not grant philosophy credit for courses not taught in a philosophy department. Philosophy majors should bear in mind that at least four of their required courses must be Philosophy courses taken on the Medford campus.
