About MACC:
Our History
Initial
efforts to form a higher education statewide structure to
promote student service began in 1992 through a partnership between
the Massachusetts Department of Education and the Massachusetts
Service Alliance (formerly the Massachusetts Youth Service Alliance
and the Massachusetts National and Community Service Commission).
The federal Corporation for National Service provided funding to
support thirteen colleges and universities in significant community
service collaborations. Through the creation of the Massachusetts
Higher Education Consortium, members strengthened their community
service programs and service learning coursework through networking,
collaboration and the sharing of best practices. The success of
these discussions among presidents, faculty, staff and students
resulted in the formation of an advisory council to continue the
development of a state-wide structure to support and promote
community service and service learning in higher education.
At a landmark meeting with Senator Edward Kennedy held at Tufts
University on May 1, 1995, thirty-eight college presidents endorsed
the proposal of the advisory council to create a formal state
compact network for Massachusetts' institutions of higher education.
This meeting led to the development of an Executive Committee of
college and university presidents. On June 5, 1995, the committee,
in affiliation with national Campus Compact, created Massachusetts
Campus Compact (MACC) as the sixteenth state Compact network. In
1996, twenty-three institutions joined as founding members, and MACC
offices were established at Tufts University. Now including
seventy-three Massachusetts colleges and universities, MACC
membership continues to provide the critical support needed to
advance this viable and thriving organization.
