GDAE joins forces with UNCTAD on International Trade Agreements

In April 2014, GDAE signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UNCTAD, the United Nations body specialized in international trade and finance. The Memorandum established a research collaboration aimed at overhauling assessments of international trade and investment agreements. Economists in GDAE’s Globalization program and UNCTAD’s Globalization division will work with an international team of experts on developing policy options for sustainable growth of income and employment in the global economy. Results will inform GDAE’s and UNCTAD’s leading reports and joint workshops in an effort to reach out to all stakeholders in the policymaking process.

United Nations GateThe first phase of the project was completed in the spring of 2014. GDAE researcher Jeronim Capaldo and the UNCTAD team updated a global database of macroeconomic data for almost every country in the world from 1970 to 2013. This wealth of information allows us to identify fundamental structures of the global economy and understand the effects of major events, such as a change in the pace of growth in emerging markets or a reform of international trade rules.

The Global Development and Environment Institute’s Globalization and Sustainable Development Program examines the economic, social and environmental impacts of economic integration in developing countries, with a particular emphasis on the WTO and NAFTA's lessons for trade and development policy. The goal of the program is to identify policies and international agreements that foster sustainable development.
