Teacher Preparation Programs

Early Childhood Licensure Program

The program of study consists of course work in the following areas: child development theory, educational practice and curriculum, special needs, culture, and the practicum component including supervised student teaching at both elementary and preschool levels. The required courses are as follows:

Pre-Practicum Component (three courses)
  • CD 001 Introduction to Child Study
  • CD 007 The Child and the Educational Process
    and one of the following two courses
  • CD 130 Field workor
    CD 171 (with placement component)

Child Development Theory Component (two of the following courses)

  • CD 51 Intellectual Development
  • CD 151 Advanced Intellectual Development
  • CD 61 Personal/Social Development
  • CD 161 Advanced Personal/Social Development
  • CD 155 Young Child's Development of Language

Curriculum Component (three courses)

  • CD 171 Curricula for Young Children
  • CD 172 Reading and Language Arts
  • CD 173 Math, Science and Technology

Special Needs Component (one of the following courses)

  • CD 90 Exceptional Child
  • CD 190 Children With Special Needs
  • or an approved alternate

Practicum Component (two courses)

  • CD 135 Supervised Teaching: Nursery (150 hrs.) 1 -1/2 course
  • CD 136 Supervised Teaching: K-2 (150 hrs.) 1 -1/2 course

Elective (one course)
An elective in the creative arts is recommended from among the following:

  • CD 178 Creative Movement and Body Language
  • CD 179 Child Art
  • CD 176 Children's Literature
  • ED 191 Teaching Through Drama and Improvisation
  • an approved alternate

Total: 13 courses

Recommendations:
It is recommended that:

  • Students arrange class schedules to allow for at least four mornings (until 12:30) free for student teaching.
  • Students take CD 171(curriculum) concurrently with CD 130 (field work) or with CD 135 (student teaching).
  • Students take CD 172 (reading and language arts) concurrently with or prior to CD 136 (supervised teaching).
  • Students take 3 1/2 credits the semester they enroll in CD 136 to allow for extra hours in the elementary classroom and 4 1/2 credits the semester enrolled in CD 135. This represents a total of 8 credits for the senior year.
