Poincaré Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship

Description

Tufts Department of Education is looking for a postdoctoral associate to work in the Poincaré Institute, a project led by Tufts University, in collaboration with TERC and nine school districts in New England. Funded by the National Science Foundation Math and Science Partnership Program, the Poincaré Institute seeks to transform and improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in middle school and the connections among the elementary, middle, and high school curricula. Key components of the program are:

  • Design and implementation of three graduate-level online courses for mathematics teachers in grades 5-9, focusing on the mathematics of functions and modeling. The highly interactive courses include both challenging mathematical content and pedagogical insights drawn from current research on mathematics learning and teaching;
  • Permanent school-based discussion forums where teachers plan, review and improve their lessons, drawing on the mathematical and pedagogical content of the courses and assisted by mentors from Tufts and TERC.
  • Research on the impact of the intervention in terms of improved knowledge and teaching methods of teachers and improved learning of their students.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates should have a Doctoral degree and may have worked as a full-time researcher in a Postdoctoral training position for no more than three years. A strong knowledge of Mathematics or Physics and a demonstrated record of research experience in mathematics and/or science education are required. Prior experience as a K-12 mathematics or science teacher is highly desirable.

Fellowship Award

Competitive salary and benefits package in accordance to candidate's experience, NSF guidelines, and Tufts University policy. The initial contract will be for one year renewable for two more. Expected starting date is September 1, 2012. No concurrent funding is allowed.

Part-time Faculty Position(s) in the School Psychology Program of the Tufts University Department of Education

The School Psychology Program in the Tufts University Department of Education seeks qualified candidates for the position of part-time lecturer, to teach the following course in Fall 2012:

Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Assessment in Children and Adolescents. Doctorate and successful experience of university teaching in the area are preferred. This course is the third in a four-course sequence of assessment in school psychology and introduces students to comprehensive assessment of children's social and adaptive development and behavior problems in the context of a problem-solving framework. The successful candidate should have a broad knowledge of multidimensional assessment (interviews, observation techniques, behavior rating scales, FBA, and social developmental analysis) and an understanding of current research, theories, and issues in best practices in assessment and intervention. A working knowledge of the legal and ethical issues surrounding assessment and educational planning, including the complex social and educational factors associated with cultural and linguistic diversity, is also required. The course is open to graduate students in school psychology and child development.
