Russell School Family Arts Night

Held October 25, 2011

Families and students of the Russell Elementary School, a PK-5 Boston Public School in Dorchester spent the evening of October 25, 2011 engaged in art-making with graduate students of the Tufts University Master of Arts in Teaching, Art Education program. This was the second annual Russell School Family Arts Night which was launched as part of the Step-Up Initiative of School-University partnerships in Boston. Patty Bode, Director of Art Education for Tufts University, and 19 graduate students worked closely with Carmen Rodriguez, Family and Community Outreach Coordinator and Tamara Blake-Canty, Principal of the William E. Russell School to facilitate the event that was attended by over 300 participants. After enjoying a pizza dinner, the grandparents, parents, siblings and Russell students collaborated to make marbelized paper, hand-crafted kites, painted gourds, autumn trees, leaf prints, a hand-print-garden mural, two large murals depicting their school, and much more. All activities were presented with bilingual Spanish-English signs and translators floated throughout the activities to support full participation. Everybody went home with lots of art work, a big smile, and just a little bit of paint on their hands.
