Sixth Annual Teaching as Civic Engagement Conference

Held October 29, 2011

On Saturday morning, October 29, 2011, as New England began to brace itself for the first snow of the season, the Tufts University Department of Education convened its sixth annual Teaching as Civic Engagement Conference.

The conference - "Immigrant Youth and School: What Educators and Communities Need to Know" – brought together graduate students, alumni, department faculty, area teachers and school psychologists, and parents and teenagers associated with the Welcome Project, an organization based at Somerville's Mystic Public Housing Development that works to empower the city's refugee and immigrant groups.

Lynne Pepall, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, kicked off the event at 9:30am with a warm welcome and words of encouragement for the work ahead. Double Jumbo Pete Shungu (LA '03, MAT '10) then took the stage and captivated the room with his words and trumpet in a spoken word performance that explored the complicated territory of the immigrant experience. Before the attendees broke off into lively small group workshops for the final activity of the morning, Warren Goldstein-Gelb and Maria Landaverde of the Welcome Project moderated an enlightening hour-long discussion with the parent and teenage panel.

Diane Lind, longtime educator with the Tufts Department of Education and current University Supervisor with the department, commented, "The parents' determination to do what's best for their children was almost palpable...As always, the students themselves were riveting because they are so honest and because they have found their way through 'the system' by so many different paths."

Please take a look at the conference website for more information about the annual event, and listen to 2010 MAT alum Pete Shungu share his opening poetry and music.
