The focus of CMS is media literacy through liberal arts
CMS isn't a film school or a journalism school, and we don't ever want to be one. Our focus isn't on the technical production of film, video, and text. As a liberal arts institution our mission is to help you understand what those art and media forms mean, why they are important, and how you can learn from them and use them more powerfully. Though you can pick up the same knowledge and a lot of the same skills that you could at other programs, our focus is to push beyond what most communications programs do.
Here's what some of our alums say about why this is a unique and important way to study media.
CMS enables students to combine their interest in media with their desire to make a difference in the world
Lots of programs talk the talk about civic engagement. CMS lets you walk the walk, too. Our students use their skills in media production and analysis to partner with community organizations, educational programs, and environmental groups, producing media that is used by the organizations and provide our students with invaluable skills and experiences.
CMS students can design their own senior project
We offer students the opportunity to do a special project of their own design during their senior year at Tufts. This project is meant to be a “capstone” experience, tying together diverse classes, internships, experiences with seeing/hearing/participating in a media culture.
Some students do traditional empirically based or historically based thesis work. But most elect to do a creative project. Projects can be films, screenplays, advertising or PR campaigns, websites, multimedia projects, media literacy campaigns, photojournalism essays and more. Some of our recent senior projects include:
- An analysis of “green marketing” in home cleaning products
- An original film noir murder mystery
- An original script for a new episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”
- A photojournalism essay about Iraqi immigrants in the Boston area
- A blog about food
- A website designed to provide news for high school students
- A documentary film about a local sustainable farming project
- A thesis about the role of media in bringing sports news to Latino communities
You can find a complete listing of other recent senior projects by clicking here.
CMS pairs your education in the classroom with opportunities outside the classroom, through our vibrant internship program and our many on-campus events
At CMS we really believe in the value of experiential learning. Tufts students have the opportunity to do internships for credit at numerous media organizations here in Boston, the 6th largest media market in the country, or anywhere in the world during the summer. Click here to learn more about the internship program.
CMS also sponsors many exciting on-campus events each semester, bringing journalists like Katie Couric, filmmakers like award-winning documentarian Yael Hersonski, and entertainer/educators like Bill Cosby to speak at Tufts. Click here to see what some of them had to say.
