After CMS

CMS graduates do everything!  We’ve had students enroll at the top graduate programs in film, journalism and communications studies (as well as go on to graduate or professional school in fields such as law, medicine and business).  We’ve had students who have gotten jobs at the networks, at community newspapers, at film studios and at Google, among other places.  Students find that the combination of having taken a rigorous and rich liberal arts education, understanding media structures, having some practical internship experience, being trained as critical thinkers and having had a lot of practice writing, positions them very well, even in today’s uncertain economic times.

-Melissa Burke (A11), Tufts Experimental College Program Assistant

“I think at any academic institution it's easy to get lost amid all the goings-on-- professors are busy and have to guide hundreds of students a day. With the CMS department, however, I really felt like I got to know and be a part of the program. From classes to career services to speakers to my own senior project, I got to know the program well and I really do view it as integral to my Tufts experience.”
-Sarah Korones (A11), Psychology Today intern

“Everyone should absolutely participate in the CMS program! It is the most unique department that Tufts has and a great community to be a part of. Additionally, there is a lot of freedom and creativity in a student's design of their for-credit classes within the department, which gives the CMS minor an extremely inter-disciplinary feel. The CMS department is one of the best things I ever became involved with at Tufts!”

-Irene Richardson (A11)

“My CMS experience allowed me to grow as an individual as I explored a field of study that was largely unfamiliar to me. Throughout my CMS studies I learned about interpersonal communication, reading and writing processes, the growing field of information sharing, and just how important communication and media studies are in today's world. In an ever-growing society that is filled with 24/7 information flow, my CMS minor helped me get a better grip on the basics of communications and how they are applied in every day life.”
-Amanda Roberts (A11), Suffolk Construction

“Pretty much everything that was significant in my Tufts experience was in some way connected to CMS. From my internship to finding funding for my senior project to advising me on my documentary, CMS has defined my Tufts experience.”
–Sara Sorcher (A09), Reporter, The National Journal

“The CMS minor allowed me flexibility to integrate a number of sprawling, seemingly disconnected passions and fuse them into one comprehensive experience. It’s a kind of tailor-made, personal study track that isn’t always available in more structured departments. The CMS project was the capstone of these experiences – I was able to pursue a path that was very personal in its significance, but I was also able to see the way it connected beyond me. That’s what CMS is about – understanding your own reach, as well as the impact of things around you. It’s been a hallmark of my Tufts experience.”
