Julia Browne played seven sets of tennis on Friday

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Tufts University's players were eliminated from competition at the 2009 NCAA Division 3 Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships at Collins Hill Athletic Club outside of Atlanta on Saturday.

In singles, three of the top four seeds fell on Saturday afternoon as upstarts continued to clear a path towards Sunday's final. Number five seed Lorne McManigle of Emory University sneaked past number four seed Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) of Tufts, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3) to advance to the semifinals.

Browne, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association New England region champion back in the fall, had opened with a win in Round of 32 action on Friday morning, easily dispatching of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Kalla Schaefer by scores of 6-3 and 6-0. Moving into the Round of 16 on Friday afternoon, Browne went up against conference rival Grace Baljon from Williams College and continued her fine play with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

In a busy day for her on Friday, Browne then played in the first round of the NCAA Doubles tournament with senior teammate Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI). Seeded second in the doubles bracket, Browne and McCooey captured a very tight match against Chapman University's Kelly Fox and Liz Lewis with 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5) scores. However, on Saturday in the quarterfinals, Carnegie Mellon's Laura Chen and Ashley Herrick bested Browne and McCooey, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
