WOMEN'S TENNIS INVITED TO NINTH STRAIGHT NCAA DIVISION 3 TOURNAMENT

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University women's tennis team is in the NCAA Division 3 Tournament field for the ninth straight year, it was announced by the selection committee tonight. Coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos received an at-large berth and a first-round bye in the 2009 Tournament.

Tufts will play the winner of Friday's Bowdoin-UMass Dartmouth first-round match in the second round on Saturday (May 9) at Amherst College. The starting time will be 2:00 pm if indoors. If the weather is poor, the match will be played at Mount Holyoke College with a 7:30 pm starting time.

Site host and national #1 seed Amherst College will face the winner of a Hunter-Skidmore first-round match in the other regional semifinal. Saturday's winners will play for the regional championship on Sunday. Eight regional winners will advance to the NCAA Championship round at Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lakeville, Georgia May 19-21.

Tufts has a 9-5 record for the 2008-09 season. The team advanced to the semifinal round of the NESCAC Tournament, where they lost 5-2 to Amherst. The nine Tufts victories include two wins over potential Saturday opponent Bowdoin College (8-8). The Jumbos have an 8-8 record all-time in NCAA Tournaments since receiving their first berth in 2001.
