Senior Lauren Gelmetti came one out away from a no-hitter

HARTFORD -- Senior 3B Samantha Kuhles (Somerville, NJ) had two hits and the eventual game-winning, two-run single in the fourth inning of the first game, and senior pitcher Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, NJ) just missed pitching a no-hitter in the second game to lead the visiting Tufts University Jumbos to a doubleheader sweep against the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball action this afternoon. The Jumbos won the games 8-4 and 8-0.

Tufts, ranked No. 8 in the nation, remains flawless at 20-0 overall and 5-0 in the NESCAC East. They tied the program record for consecutive victories with 20, matching a streak by that started in 1995 and extended into 1996. They will look to establish a new mark when they play a single game at Trinity on Sunday. The Bantams drop to 9-9 overall and 2-3 in the division.

Trinity led game one, 4-3, after three innings on two-run jacks in the first and third by senior co-captain Ariana Mullin (Woodbridge, CT) and sophomore 1B Nicole Nardella (Beverly, MA), respectively. In the fourth, Tufts scored three times on Kuhles' two-RBI single and a ground out by Hovhannessian to take the lead for good at 6-4.

Bantam first-year Katherine Poulos (Wilton, CT) took the loss in the circle and was victimized by four Trinity errors in the field. Trinity junior OF Jessica Tait (North Salem, NY) went 2 for 3 with a triple in the game. Kuhles (2 for 5, two RBI, two runs) and Chapman (3 for 3, two runs) led the 12-hit Tufts attack. Sophomore pitcher Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) got the win, allowing eight hits and four runs.

Gelmetti finished with a one-hit shutout in the second game. She surrendered just three walks over the first 26 outs, before Trinity junior SS Patricia Cipicchio (Southmont, NC) squelched the no-hit bid with a double. Gelmetti promptly caught the last batter of the game looking for her third strikeout.

Junior SS Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) hit a two-run double in the top of the third to give Tufts a 4-0 lead. Senior 2B Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA) followed an RBI double by senior RF Maya Ripecky (Chicago, IL) with a two-run single in the fourth inning that put Tufts up 7-0. Ripecky doubled again and scored in the seventh, finishing 2 for 3 with three runs and an RBI. First-year DH Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) was 3 for 4 with two runs scored in the two-hole. Lopez also had three hits in the game.

The Jumbos and Bantams play the third game of their NESCAC East series on Sunday starting at 11:00 am.
