CHAPMAN, SANTONE EARN CONFERENCE AWARDS FOR CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE

Pitcher of the Week Izzie Santone

Player of the Week Laura Chapman

MEDFORD -- Senior CF Laura Chapman (Seattle, WA/Bush School) and sophomore pitcher Izzie Santone (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) of the NESCAC Champion Tufts University softball team have been selected as the conference's Player and Pitcher of the Week, primarily for their roles in helping the Jumbos secure their sixth league title over the weekend.

Chapman set the table from the lead-off spot in all three games during the NESCAC Tournament, played at Tufts University's Spicer Field May 1-3. She was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Friday's 9-3 victory over Williams to open tournament play. In the winner's bracket game against Wesleyan on Saturday, Chapman finished 3 for 4 with a run scored and a stolen base as Tufts won 6-1. She was then 2 for 3 with a run scored and another stolen base in Sunday's 8-2 victory over Wesleyan that won the championship. She also had two walks in the three games, giving her a .750 on-base percentage.

Santone earned a win and a save, and did not allow an earned run in 10 tournament innings. She pitched a complete game for Saturday's win over Wesleyan, allowing seven hits and one run (unearned) with no walks in seven innings. With Tufts leading the championship game 6-2, she entered in the fifth and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and no walks, to earn her third save.

The team's week had begun with the only loss of the season on Tuesday during a double-header at Bowdoin. After Tufts won the first game 3-1, with Chapman going 1 for 2 with two runs scored, their 35-game winning streak came to an end in a 2-1 loss to the Judges in the nightcap. Despite taking the loss, Santone allowed just four hits and no earned runs.

In five games during the week overall, Chapman hit .500 with six runs scored and five stolen bases. Santone, in 16 innings, allowed 14 hits and two walks while holding opponents to a .233 average.

The two NESCAC weekly honors give the Jumbos six for the season. Santone is the conference's Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year.
