THREE FROM SOFTBALL ON ESPN THE MAGAZINE REGIONAL ACADEMIC TEAM

Roni Herbst is one of three Jumbos honored for her performance on the field and in class

MEDFORD -- Combining outstanding academics with stellar play on the softball diamond, three members of the Tufts University team have been voted on to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams.

Senior 2B Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA) is on the College Division First Team for District 1 (Northeast), while senior 3B Sam Kuhles (Somerville, NJ) and senior OF Roni Herbst (Montclair, NJ) are on the Second Team. Lopez is now eligible for the Academic All-America team as a first teamer for the region.

All three players are leading contributors to an extraordinary Tufts season. The Jumbos won their sixth NESCAC championship last weekend and are currently 38-1. Ranked #5 nationally, they open NCAA Tournament Regional play at Endicott College today.

Academic All-District nominees must be starters or key reserves on their teams with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. They are eligible after completing one full calendar year at their institution and reaching sophomore athletic eligibility. Lopez and Herbst are bio-psychology majors and Kuhles majors in biology.

Tufts is the only school with three representatives on the College Division All-District Academic teams, which include Division II and III institutions.
