SOMERVILLE -- The Tufts University Jumbos used lockdown defense
to shutout the Colby College Mules 3-0 on Homecoming Day Saturday
afternoon in NESCAC women's soccer play at Kraft Field.
The Jumbos did not take long to take control of the match, scoring
less than seven minutes in when senior Whitney Hardy (Truckee, CA)
headed the ball home after senior Cara Cadigan's (Nahant, MA)
shot ricocheted off the crossbar. It was Hardy's third goal of the year.
Cadigan would double the lead for Tufts with 30:01 left in the first
half after she stole the ball and went in on a breakaway; tallying her
second goal of the season.
In the second half the Jumbo defense did not allow a single Colby
shot on goal while the offense continued with tremendous pressure. Tufts
added a late insurance goal with 13 minutes remaining on junior
Bailey Morgan's (Universal City, TX) first goal of the season. The
ball would graze the crossbar and sail over the head of Colby's junior
keeper Loni Pisani (Kanata, Ontario). Sophomore Lauren O'Connor
(Dudley, MA) and junior Audrey Alma (Portland, OR) earned the
assists.
Tufts senior keeper Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH) played the
full 90 minutes for the Jumbos, and only had to make one save for the
shutout. Pisani made four saves for the Mules while allowing the three
goals.
The Jumbos are now above .500 in the NESCAC at 3-2 as well as in the
overall standings at 5-4. Colby falls to 1-4-1 in conference and 3-5-1
overall. Tufts takes on Connecticut College in a 4 pm matchup at Kraft
Field on Wednesday. The Mules welcome in-state rival Southern Maine on
Wednesday.
