Asian American Peer Leader Program 2009-2010
The Asian American Center, founded in 1983, is a resource for the university and the Asian/Asian American communities and
fosters a supportive environment for the academic and personal development of students through its year-round programs and
services. The Center recognizes the mono- and multi-racial East Asian, Southeast Asian, and South Asian peoples, cultures
and identities present in the Tufts community, and advocates for students to ensure a successful college experience.
What is a Peer Leader?
Asian American Peer Leaders are selected sophomores and juniors who work with assigned first-years who self-identify as “Asian American.” Our Peer Leader Program is a resource provided in addition to the University’s Orientation Leaders. Your Peer Leader will be writing to you over the summer and will be on campus during Orientation. ![]() Why a Peer Leader?
Many first-years enjoy meeting upper-class students and view their Asian American Peer Leader as a valuable resource. Peer Leaders are eager to share their own experiences with you and to help you make a successful transition to college. Peer Leaders are able to address general college concerns as well as those related to growing up Asian American or Asian in America. They can also help you navigate and understand the importance of being a part of an Asian American community. Feel free to seek out your Peer Leader if you have questions on academics, co-curricular activities, resident hall life, the Asian American community, or the Tufts community-at-large. Throughout the year, your Peer Leader will keep you informed of events that may be of particular interest to you. Some new students enjoy the group social activities, while others feel more comfortable just spending individual time with their Peer Leader. You decide how and when you would like to get involved. “My Peer Leader was a great mentor who eased my transition into college by giving me advice and
encouraging me to get involved in the Asian American community. All of the Peer Leaders were very welcoming and dedicated
to making my first year a success. ”
